about us

purpose

To provide short and medium term care in secure custody to juveniles who are awaiting court action or transfer to another facility and who cannot be served in an open setting.

Objectives

  • Provide for juveniles' basic needs such as food, shelter, clothing and medical care
  • Prevent the abridgement of juveniles' legal rights during detainment at the center
  • Provide for the physical, emotional, religious, educational and social needs of juveniles during detainment
  • House juveniles in a safe and humane environment, maintaining the level of security necessary to prevent escape and assure that juveniles live free as possible the fear of assault or intimidation by staff or other juveniles
  • Serve juveniles, male and female, eight to seventeen years of age

We envision a safe environment where children and adults are responsible, law abiding, and add value to our community, and communities demonstrate the capacity for reconciliation, encouragement and the full incorporation of all our people.  We envision providing a safe and secure facility in a professional environment that fosters the pro-social qualities of residents and the vocational development of staff.

With our legal mandate and our values as a foundation, our mission in corporation with the community is to contribute to the safety of the community by maintaining a secure detention facility, promote public safety, victim restoration and offender change.  Provide quality care to those youth placed by the judicial system and to provide our youth with services which assist with their pro-social development.

The Piedmont Regional Juvenile Detention Center is committed to providing exceptional programs and services to residents, including the following:

  • Behavioral observation and evaluation for court approval
  • Educational services which create a pattern of success and motivate residents to continue their education
  • Psycho-social groups which target adolescent issues and delinquent thinking
  • Recreational activities designed to provide energy release and skill development
  • Opportunities for success through a high expectation behavioral management program
  • Mental health and case management services
  • Primary healthcare

facility upgrades

    new year new facility

    PRJDC has recently undergone several upgrades thanks to the help of ABM and its subcontractors. The project was funded by the PRJDC commission (including Nottoway, Buckingham, Prince Edward, Amelia, Cumberland, and Lunenburg). The work in this project includes improvements/replacement for: Boiler plant, Chiller plant, BAS, HVAC, Lighting, Building Envelope, Water Systems, and Security upgrades.

    Department of juvenile justice regulatory audit

    PRJDC had its last 3 Year Regulatory Audit on November 28, 2023 and was recertified.

    Department of juvenile Justice USDA audit

    PRJDC passed its last USDA audit on November 17, 2023 for the facility's Food and Physical Plant Compliance.
