Our food program was created in compliance with the USDA SNP (School Nutrition Program). The residents get three meals a day as well as snacks. As a part of our behavior program we also offer residents an opportunity to receive a meal from a nearby restaurant of their choice.
Residents stay an average of 15 days before being released or transferred by the committing court. The court will, at times, order a resident to carry out their sentence within our facility. Residents that are committed to DJJ (Department of Juvenile Justice) while in our care may be held for several months before receiving placement at a state facility to serve their sentence.
PRJDC is owned and governed by a board that represents the counties of Prince Edward, Lunenburg, Nottoway, Amelia, Buckingham and Cumberland.
Residents have the opportunity to participate in many activities throughout the day. Our teaching staff are contracted through Prince Edward County Schools and follow the regular schedule. After class and during summer break, residents are given recreation time for playing basketball, watching movies together, playing video games, building puzzles or going outside. Every afternoon a group session is held with the residents to discuss things such as substance abuse education, victim sensitivity, anger management, or how to build different social skills. These voluntary group sessions may be led by one of our Detention Counselors or by our Mental Health Professionals, with the goal of opening up communication and building better pathways.
Our facility is licensed for children male and female ages 8-17, with the average age being about 16 years old. Once a resident turns 18, they are moved to a jail that serves their committing jurisdiction.
No, parents cannot elect to send their child to PRJDC or do tours. All residents are placed here by a committing court; meaning a judge has to send a resident to our facility. We house residents for things as simple as a violation of a court order (i.e. not going to school) up to charges for Capital Murder.
