education program

The state operated educational program is funded through the Virginia Department of  Education. Educational program offerings include the core subjects of English, Math, Science,  and Social Studies. Additional subjects such as health, P.E., and electives round out the curriculum. PRJDC strives to offer Job Shadowing/Career Exploration and  Character Education online programs that support career development and career plans.

The Educational program offers each student the required courses in which the student  was previously enrolled. These courses may include online offerings to round out the student’s  schedule. This is completed with consultation between the school division staff where the student  last attended and the PRJDC principal; thereby, creating a unique schedule for each student in  attendance. While at PRJDC, most students will participate in six, 55 minute classes; however,  students that were enrolled in a block schedule at the school division where they last attended,  may be enrolled in fewer classes each day, concentrating on each subject for a longer time  period.

Individual education plans are supported via collaboration between the transition  specialist and classroom teacher(s). Parents are an integral component in the planning for  specialized needs and programs, assuring that all areas of the student’s required school program  are met. Classroom size is optimized at an 7:1 student/teacher ratio whenever possible or as  outlined in the Individual Education Plan.

Students currently enrolled in the General Education Program (GED) upon arrival will  follow a schedule in preparation for testing. Students that have already earned a GED will be  offered online additional courses per their level of interest and career goals: however, attendance  in classes is not required.

Teachers follow the Virginia Standards of Learning (SOL), develop pacing guides and  prepare lesson plans that follow the four, nine-week grading periods. Parents are notified of  student academic progress on a nine week grading schedule. Teacher may contact parents via  mail, phone or email as needed. Parent/guardians receive an informational letter upon  enrollment describing the educational program.

Teachers and the principal welcome  parent/guardian communication and encourage support for successful program completion.
