In June of 1997 the Board of Supervisors in Nottoway County held a meeting to discuss the formation and construction of PRJDC. Based on a Juvenile Detention Needs Assessment completed in July the prior year, the Board recognized and confirmed the need for a detention center to serve the Tenth and Eleventh judicial districts of Virginia. It was decided on this day that the counties of Amelia, Buckingham, Cumberland, Lunenburg, Nottoway and Prince Edward would work together to complete this project and govern the new facility.
In our first five years we served an average of 210 residents each year, that's 210 youths that were given the opportunity and taught skills to build a better life for themselves. Its been a crucial part of our program to guide our residents in how to understand and navigate the world around them as the individual that they are.
Over the years PRJDC has gone from serving the original six counties of our board, to also serving surrounding jurisdictions such as Greensville and Brunswick, when they are in need of resident placement.
